Beat the Procrastination

Procrastination is something we all have to deal with, whether we like it or not. It hinders our performance and slows us down most of the time, although it can be beneficial every now and then. Today, however, I’ll be talking about how to deal with the procrastination that we all dislike.

The first step is to notice that you are procrastinating. God knows how many times we procrastinate on things without realising it, so noticing it is a key factor to dealing with it. It is only when you are aware of yourself and what you are doing and whether you are procrastinating or not that you can then face it and deal with it. Once you’ve noticed it, congratulate yourself because it is not easy to be able to pay that much of that kind of attention to yourself.

The next step is to ask yourself why. What are you feeling and why are you feeling this? What task specifically is causing that feeling and why? Why do you think you respond to that task this way? Once you’ve figured out the source of your procrastination and why you are feeling that way, then you can figure out what to do to counteract that and reduce the friction between yourself and your work. There’s no point in dealing with the symptoms without knowing their cause.

The final step is to act accordingly. You’ve noticed that you’re procrastinating and you know what’s making you procrastinate, so how can you deal with it? Make a plan that will step by step ease you into your work and reduce the friction between you and your work. Procrastination needs action in order for it to be dealt with so do something to change your situation and make it more enjoyable and less scary. You could do this by breaking down the task into smaller chunks, or by playing a background noise, or changing your environment. The important bit is that it helps you get started by making you more willing to begin.

These tips won’t get rid of procrastination entirely, but it will make it easier to deal with. Gradually, your situation will become better and it’ll become easier to notice that you’re procrastinating and even easier to deal with it every single time. But to get there, you’ll have to follow through these steps every time you notice you’re procrastinating.

That’s all from me today. I’ll see you in my next post! Now, time to face that thing we’ve been procrastinating on! ;)
