Quote of the Month (May 24)

“Our bodies are gardens in which our wills are gardeners.” - Iago (Othello)

This quote came from one of Shakespeare’s most complex characters, Iago, from the play Othello. You’d think that from all of Shakespeare’s characters, Iago would be the last person for me to quote, but, despite all his lies and manipulation, this line has some truth to it.

Whilst studying Othello, Iago's character stood out. You’d hate but also grow to admire somehow. He is great at manipulation and uses his strength to bring all the other characters to their demise. This quote shows us how he approaches life and the importance of our will power. Although he used his power for the evil, we could use the same power for the better.

This beautiful metaphor tells us that whatever we put our mind to we can make it happen. It does specify ‘bodies’ so you can approach it from a health and wellbeing perspective, but I’ve always thought of it to mean more. By more, I mean how you dress, how you live and so on. If you put your mind to becoming successful, you’ll achieve that success and find yourself surrounded by achievements. If you want to become rich, you can gain wealth and drape your body in expensive clothing whilst travelling in luxurious vehicles. There’s so much you can do if you just believe and put your mind to it and you’ll see it reflect on yourself and your surroundings.

We are the ones in control of ourselves and make the decisions for ourselves and our futures. When it comes to will power, what seems impossible can be achieved. In fact, you’ll see that this concept is applicable to the many successful people of today and their stories because them believing in themselves is all they needed to get going.

Will power is a form of motivation. It helps you become more disciplined. It is a way for you to get ahead because you make the choices and you are in control. The outcomes of your work is the result of your effort. That’s why, like Iago said, “Our bodies are gardens in which our wills are gardeners.”

That’s all from me today! I’ll see you in my next post! Keep Gardening! ;)
